Washington:The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy aimed at curbing birth tourism. This move is intended to prevent the exploitation of its immigration system and the misuse of US citizenship.
According to United News of Bangladesh, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio detailed the policy in a press statement. The policy targets individuals and networks involved in facilitating birth tourism, which involves arranging for foreign nationals to give birth on US soil to obtain citizenship for their children.
These networks have been known to advertise services and coach prospective parents on how to misrepresent themselves on visa applications. They charge substantial fees for these arrangements, leveraging the US immigration system for profit.
The policy, enacted under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, will affect those who knowingly engage in or facilitate birth tourism. This includes operators of birth tourism networks, visa advisors who promote fraudulent practices, and foreign medical providers who assist in such schemes. The restrictions also extend to individuals who misuse Medicaid and other public benefits.
The Trump Administration emphasizes that these measures are part of efforts to protect the integrity of US citizenship and safeguard public resources and national security. By enacting these visa restrictions, the administration aims to deter those who exploit the system for financial gain.
Additionally, certain family members of individuals involved in birth tourism may also be subject to these visa restrictions, as noted by the US Department of State.
