Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain today emphasized the need for the government to urgently decide on measures to protect the public from earthquakes. He highlighted the potential risks, drawing parallels with recent earthquakes in Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan, and underscored the vulnerability of older buildings in Dhaka.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Zahid made these remarks during a discussion at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium of the National Press Club. He stressed that this is the critical time for the government, conscious citizens, and especially those involved in building design and planning to act. Delaying action could result in significant damage, and steps should be taken to minimize potential harm.
Dr. Zahid also touched on the broader issue of climate change, pointing out the inadequate response from developed countries. He noted the varying climate patterns in Bangladesh, such as prolonged winters and excessive heat, as evidence of the ongoing changes.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh experienced an earthquake measuring 5.7 magnitude at 10:38 AM, which was felt across the country, including Dhaka. This event prompted the leaders and workers attending the discussion meeting, organized jointly by the Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal Dhaka Mohanagar North and South, to evacuate the venue quickly.
Addressing the current political climate, Dr. Zahid recalled past incidents of arson terrorism and warned against division within the nation. He urged unity and vigilance against those who might exploit any disunity, particularly highlighting the actions of those associated with past dictatorial regimes.
Dr. Zahid concluded by appealing to all political parties to seek the people’s mandate for the upcoming elections. The meeting was chaired by Amir Hossain Amir, Convener of Matsyajibi North, and included contributions from former secretary Abdur Rahim and Shah Alam, among others.
