New york: The UN General Assembly’s Third Committee has unanimously adopted a resolution concerning the plight of Rohingya Muslims, calling for renewed global efforts to find a long-lasting solution to the crisis, and advocating for the safe and voluntary return of Rohingyas to Myanmar. This resolution was jointly presented by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU) and was cosponsored by 105 countries, as reported by a message from the Bangladesh mission to the UN in New York.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the resolution, which has been adopted annually since 2017, highlights ongoing human rights violations in Rakhine State, the targeted persecution of Rohingya Muslims, and restrictions on humanitarian access. It also addresses the continued influx of Rohingyas into Bangladesh and neighboring countries, reaffirming the need for sustained international engagement to ensure their safe, dignified, and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.
Following the resolution’s adoption, the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude to member states for their ongoing support. However, they also conveyed disappointment over the lack of significant progress in facilitating the return of the displaced population over the past eight years. The delegation emphasized that Bangladesh can no longer sustain the burden of hosting 1.3 million Rohingyas and urged the international community to take swift action to facilitate their repatriation to Myanmar.
