Chattogram: Two more prosecution witnesses today provided depositions against former Cox’s Bazar-4 lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi in a corruption case. The witnesses, Rezaul Karim and Tanvir Alam, former senior officer and assistant officer respectively of Islami Bank Limited’s Teknaf branch, testified before Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court has now recorded statements from a total of 10 witnesses in this case. Bodi, the accused, was virtually connected to the court from Dhaka’s Keraniganj Central Jail, where his lawyer cross-examined the witnesses.
The charges against Bodi were framed by the acting judge Md Ismail Hossain on September 13, 2020. Advocate Rezaul Karim Rony, representing the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), stated that the court has scheduled the next hearing for November 10 to record more statements.
The ACC filed a case against Bodi in 2007, accusing him of illegally acquiring wealth worth approximately Taka 66.70 lakh, which was beyond his known income sources. Additionally, Bodi was accused of concealing wealth valued at about Taka 43.44 lakh in his income tax return. Although a charge sheet was submitted against him in 2008, the case proceedings were stalled by a high court order. The trial resumed in 2017 after an appeal in the Supreme Court overturned the stay order.
