Chapainawabganj: Two cousin brothers drowned while bathing in the Pagla River in the Bahalabari Ghat area of Shibganj Upazila in the district this afternoon. The tragic incident has left the local community in mourning.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the deceased were identified as Safi, 14, son of Jalal Uddin, and Zubayer, 14, son of Kamal Uddin. Both were residents of Noyalabhanga union in Shibganj Upazila. Safi was an eighth-grade student at Ranhati High School, while Zubayer attended a secondary school in Dinajpur.
Police sources reported that the boys were part of a group of four cousin brothers who had gone to the Pagla River with an uncle for a bath. Safi and Zubayer entered the river first, and at one point, they sank beneath the water. Despite immediate rescue efforts by local residents, the teenagers were eventually retrieved from the river, but they had already succumbed to drowning.
Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman of Shibganj Police Station confirmed the incident. He stated that police rushed to the scene upon receiving information and recovered the bodies, which were subsequently handed over to their families.
