Jhenaidah: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today announced that the prosecution will seek the maximum punishment for the accused in the high-profile Ramisa rape and murder case, with the trial scheduled to commence tomorrow. "We expect that the available evidence will ensure the maximum punishment for the accused," he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Asaduzzaman made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at a financial assistance cheque distribution programme at Shailkupa Upazila Parishad's auditorium in Jhenaidah district. The event was organized by the Jhenaidah Zila Parishad.
During his address, Md Asaduzzaman also mentioned that the government had requested five members from the opposition party to join the constitutional amendment committee. The opposition has communicated that they will announce their decision at a later date. "We are now waiting for their decision," he noted.
The minister emphasized the collective responsibility to shield society and the state from drug-related issues, calling for unity against drug abuse. "There will be no compromise on drugs," he asserted.
Additionally, Asaduzzaman disclosed the government's plan to distribute family cards to 40 million households nationwide. Farmer cards have already been introduced in certain areas, with plans for a broader implementation. He also indicated that the government is planning to provide allowances to religious leaders, including imams and priests.
The programme was presided over by Jhenaidah Zila Parishad Administrator M A Majid and featured speeches from Deputy Commissioner Md Noman Hossain, Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mahfuzur Rahman, and others. Senior joint general secretary of Jhenaidah BNP Abdus Salam Biswas, Upazila BNP General Secretary Humayun Babur Firoz, and Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Humayun Kabir Mollah were also in attendance.
