Two BMDA staffers suspended over Rajshahi journo attack

Two staffers of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) have been suspended in connection with an attack on journalists in Rajshahi.

The suspended officials are warehouse keeper Md Jibon and the driver of BMDA director Abdus Sabur.

BMDA chairman Akhtar Jahan said the duo was primarily suspended as they found their involvement in torturing reporter Bulbul Habib and camera person Rubel Islam of ATN News.

He also said that a probe body will be formed to look into the attack. Further decisions will be taken about who else is involved in the attack after getting the investigation report, added Akhtar Jahan.

Earlier, the two journalists came under attack on the premises of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) when they went there on duty around 8:30am.

Cameraman Rubel has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with injuries on his lips and right ear, said Rafiqul Islam Rafiq, president of Rajshahi Journalist Union.

Physicians said that Rubel’s eardrum has ruptured and he is bleeding from his ear.

Victim Bulbul Habib said a section of BMDA staffers launched the attack on them around 8.30am.

“We went to BMDA premises around 8.20am and started a live telecast on how the government officials are responding to the new office timing,” Bulbul added.

When BMDA Executive Director Abdur Rashid came to know about the matter, he started shouting at us.

Moments later, some 15-20 BMDA staffers swooped on the duo and beat them up. They also damaged their camera during the attack, he added.
