Rangpur: The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and other agencies, has arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of four family members in Rangpur. RpMP Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud shared details of the arrests and the motive behind the killings during a press briefing.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, police discovered the decomposed bodies of a retired teacher, Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bola, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty, 25, and son Priyam Chakraborty, 12, at their home in Machhuapara area of Ward No 24. Relatives had alerted the police after finding the house locked for several days. With assistance from the fire service, authorities gained entry and subsequently sent the bodies to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
A special RpMP DB police team, led by Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakraborty, apprehended the suspects, Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, in overnight raids. The duo, both from the Machhuapara area, confessed to the murders during an initial investigation, revealing that they had killed the family while under the influence of Yaba tablets.
The teacher, Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, reportedly confronted the suspects after noticing them on the roof taking Yaba tablets. In response, the perpetrators strangled him with a towel. They subsequently killed his wife, daughter, and son in similar fashion as they attempted to intervene or respond to the commotion.
After committing the murders, Siddhartha and Mugdha cleaned themselves, ate, and took further steps to cover their tracks, including tampering with the house’s contents and the family’s mobile phones. The incident was made to appear as a robbery or random act of violence.
An official murder case has been filed by Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the deceased teacher, at Rangpur Kotwali Metropolitan Police Station.
