Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has directed the relevant authorities to extend protection to a prosecution witness involved in the Chankharpul crimes against humanity case. This decision was made today by the tribunal’s three-member panel, chaired by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, following a prosecution request for the witness’s safety.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal has also established a three-member probe committee to oversee the witness’s protection. Prosecution witness Gazi MH Tamim reported that the witness, who testified two days ago, has faced security threats at their workplace. Individuals there have been organizing processions and displaying banners against the witness, creating an atmosphere of intimidation.

In response to these actions, the prosecution submitted a plea supported by video footage and photographs to highlight the activities endangering the witness. The tribunal conducted a hearing, consulted with the witness, and subsequently instructed both the local police station’s officer-in-charge and the head of the witness’s workplace to ensure the witness’s safety. Additionally, the tribunal ordered the removal of all derogatory posters and banners targeting the witness.
