The fire that broke out at a tyre warehouse in city's Dewanhat area on Saturday noon has been doused after around one and a half hours.

The train communication between Chattogram and Dhaka resumed after the fire was brought under control, said Abdul Hamid, deputy assistant director of Agrabad Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Earlier, Chattogram Railway authorities suspended the movement of trains after a fire broke out on a large pile of discarded tyres stored under city's Dewan hat over bridge beside the rail tracks at 1 pm today.

Abdul Hamid said the blaze was doused around 2.30 pm after around one and a half hours of frantic efforts by firefighters from 12 units.

The origin of the fire and the extent of damages could not be ascertained immediately, the fire service officer said.

"The Chattogram-bound Sonar Bangla Express from Dhaka was scheduled to arrive at this time. However, the train was halted at the Chattogram Cabin Junction due to fire, a kilometre away from the railway station.

Besides, the Dhaka-bound Mahanagar Express and Mymensingh-bound Bijoy Express did not leave the station either," said Jafar Alam, station master of the Chattogram Railway.

A large pile of discarded tyres caught fire under the Dewanhat overbridge in Chattogram on Saturday, Apr 29, 2023.

Thick black smoke was visible from far away after the fire started.
