Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali announced today that traffic sergeants stationed on roads and highways will be equipped with small arms to address the issue of snatching.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the decision comes in response to rising concerns over an increase in mugging incidents in the capital. Commissioner Ali emphasized the importance of tackling these allegations during a press briefing after inaugurating a new city bus service featuring counter and e-ticketing at Uttara Azompur Kanchabazar.

The event was chaired by the President of Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association, M A Baten, and attended by notable figures including Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of the DMP Md Sarwar and General Secretary of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation Humayun Kabir Khan. General Secretary of Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association Md Saiful Alam served as the main speaker.

Commissioner Ali highlighted that the DMP has intensified its anti-mugging operations, resulting in the apprehension of numerous snatchers, which has led to a decrease in such incidents. He assured that these efforts would continue. The decision to arm traffic sergeants comes after muggers were found using illegal weapons during their crimes, prompting the need for increased security measures for traffic officers on duty.
