Sylhet: The third cargo flight from Sylhet Osmani International Airport departed for Spain on Thursday night. A chartered Galistair Aviation freighter, designated as flight 8S-1934, carried 60 tonnes of readymade garments and took off at 10:27pm. Shahnewaz Talukder, the Sylhet regional manager of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, confirmed the departure.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the first direct cargo flight from Sylhet was launched on April 27, also carrying 60 tonnes of garments. The second flight departed for Madrid, Spain on May 1, with approximately 58 tonnes of garments on board. Shahnewaz Talukder mentioned that currently, one cargo flight is transporting garment products to Europe every week.
He further noted that the construction of a packing house in Sylhet would enhance the export capacity of the region. “If a packing house is built, it will open the door to exporting fresh vegetables to Europe,” he said. Businesses can take the initiative to set up packing houses with the government promising full cooperation.
Md. Hafiz Ahmed, Director of Sylhet Osmani International Airport, stated that three cargo flights have been operated since the launch. Plans are underway to operate two flights per week to increase the export volume.
