Dhaka: Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Monday expressed deep concern over the current state of the Teesta River, which has transformed from being a nurturing force to a source of despair for the northern region of Bangladesh, particularly in Rangpur. Once a thriving area known for its agricultural abundance, Rangpur now faces challenges that have left it almost barren.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Minister Dulu made these remarks during a seminar on ‘Sustainable Management of the Teesta River’, held at the BUET Academic Council Building. The event was organized by the Ministry of Water Resources in collaboration with BUET’s Department of Water Resources Engineering, with Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee attending as the chief guest.
Minister Dulu highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that many residents of the Teesta region constantly inquire about the future of the river project. He emphasized that their confusion and despair necessitate immediate action from political leaders and experts alike. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has committed to prioritizing the Teesta project if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gains public support.
Dulu, himself a native of the Teesta region, underscored the dual significance of his role in addressing the crisis-both as a regional inhabitant and as the minister responsible for disaster management. He called on experts to swiftly provide viable solutions to develop an effective project that can restore hope to the affected communities.
The minister urged stakeholders to expedite their efforts, ensuring that the Teesta River can once again serve as a lifeline for the people of northern Bangladesh.
