Dhaka: Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced today that efforts will soon commence to protect approximately 20 kilometers of the Teesta River’s banks.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Ministry of Finance has sanctioned Tk 243 crore for the protection of 43 kilometers of riverbanks in the erosion-prone areas of Teesta. The initial phase of this project will target 20 kilometers of the riverbanks this year, with the remaining 23 kilometers to follow shortly.
During a discussion focused on Reform in the Water Sector, held at the Pani Bhaban conference room in Dhaka in observance of World Water Day, Rizwana emphasized the preparatory efforts underway. She stated that local offices of the Bangladesh Water Development Board have been instructed to maintain a stockpile of Geo bags and blocks to respond quickly in emergencies.
Addressing the broader Teesta Mega Plan, Rizwana noted that the feasibility study timeline has been extended by two years under two specific conditions. She mentioned that Power China will engage with local communities residing along the Teesta banks to discuss their plans and also consult with those who depend on the river for their livelihood.
Rizwana added that public hearings have occurred in five districts, paving the way for forthcoming expert-level discussions. An expert team from China is expected to participate in these deliberations.
The meeting was presided over by Water Resources Secretary Nazmul Ahsan. Other key speakers included Director General of the Water Development Board AKM Tahmidul Islam, Director General of Bangladesh Wetland and Haor Department Md. Akhteruzzaman, and Executive Director of the Institute of Water Modelling SM Mahbubur Rahman.
