Dhaka: The state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has launched a new initiative to sell potatoes at Tk 40 per kg, aiming to stabilize market prices. This move comes as part of TCB's broader efforts to manage the prices of essential commodities, alongside its regular offerings. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin inaugurated the potato sales program today outside the TCB office in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka. This initiative will see potatoes being sold from 50 trucks across various locations in the city, complementing TCB's existing commodity distribution network. The program is designed to support around one crore families ahead of the Holy Month of Ramadan by expanding TCB's food basket. In his address, the Commerce Adviser emphasized the government's integrated approach to increasing and diversifying TCB's sale items. This includes procuring goods through negotiations and saving money, with a focus on expanding the availability of essential commodities. The Direc torate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) is also expected to enhance its field operations to ensure effective market monitoring. Bashir Uddin highlighted ongoing efforts to address supply chain issues, including reducing duties on sugar, edible oil, and dates. He noted that the government has approved the import of 20 crore pieces of eggs, alongside potatoes and rice, to bolster market supply and stabilize prices. The Commerce Adviser urged for collective support to restore market stability, expressing hope that these measures would soon bring comfort to consumers. The TCB's potato sales will continue until the market situation normalizes, with each customer allowed to purchase up to 3 kgs of potatoes. Additionally, TCB plans to operate 20 trucks in the Chattogram region to further extend its reach. Commerce Secretary Md Selim Uddin attended the inauguration as a special guest, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining affordable access to essential goods.
