Dhaka: National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan announced that taxpayers in the country will be able to submit their individual income tax returns online starting this July. This initiative represents a shift from the previous year when the process began in September, aiming to encourage timely submissions and streamline the tax compliance process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement was made during a seminar titled ‘Food Security of Marginal Communities and VAT’, organized by the Youth Policy Network at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) auditorium. Addressing the seminar as the chief guest, Rahman emphasized that the move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance digital infrastructures and taxpayer services in order to promote voluntary compliance and transparency in the taxation system.
Rahman revealed that a total of 17 lakh income tax returns had been filed online so far, compared to only 5 lakh during the same period last year. He shared that the revenue collection had reached nearly Taka 3.53 lakh crore until the previous day.
The NBR chairman also outlined plans to develop a fully automated revenue system that would eliminate the need for taxpayers to appear in person at tax offices. Regarding the ongoing movement at the NBR, Rahman expressed hope for resolution through discussions with the Finance Adviser, who has already announced amendments to the Ordinance on the revenue board by July.
He assured that discussions with revenue board personnel would take place to find a solution and urged all parties to prioritize national interest in their actions. Rahman stressed the importance of working for the country’s benefit, advocating for reforms and laws that serve the national interest rather than individual agendas.
