Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed his sincere gratitude to the head of the interim government, Professor Dr. Yunus, party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated today. He further extended thanks to the advisory council members and all involved in the process for taking necessary measures to smooth the path to democracy despite adversities over the past year, Fakhrul Islam noted. His comments were made during a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's Gulshan political office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul announced that BNP welcomes the announcement of the election date in February 2026. The party believes this historic announcement will resolve the political deadlock in Bangladesh and pave the way for a democratic transition. The Secretary General emphasized that BNP expects the government and the Election Commission to ensure the election is fair, free, impartial, and acceptable to all.
He called upon all political parties and the public to support the election process, institutionalize democracy, and form an effective national parliament. Fakhrul also expressed BNP's prayers for the souls of the martyrs of the July Uprising and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He urged the government to provide full compensation and better treatment to the families of the martyrs.
Furthermore, Fakhrul conveyed BNP's gratitude to Tarique Rahman for his leadership in the democratic movement over the past eight years. He appealed to the citizens to work towards building a prosperous Bangladesh envisioned by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, a democratic Bangladesh as pursued by national leader Begum Khaleda Zia, and a modern, humane, democratic Bangladesh led by the young leader Tarique Rahman. He urged everyone to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people.
