All encroachers will have to vacate the city’s canals regardless of who they are, mayor of Dhaka South Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said Wednesday.

“We are not concerned about the encroachers. They all have to vacate the illegally occupied canal areas,” said Taposh, while inaugurating the demarcation pillars at Old Buriganga channel in the city’s Kalunagar area.

There is a 10-storey building constructed illegally here and its demolition work started today, he noted.

“We will visit here next Wednesday. We hope that the part (of the illegal building) over the canal or river will not be there,” said Taposh.

He also said the demarcation process is being conducted alongside all the relevant government agencies on the Old Buriganga channel.

“We have already started re-excavation work of the old Buriganga channel. From today we’ve fully involved our district administration, Water Development Board, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), property division and other organisations to measure the boundaries,” said the mayor.

The installation of permanent boundary pillars has started today, he added.

Taposh also hoped that this effort will be visible soon and the Old Buriganga channel will regain its earlier state.

Based on the CS and other maps of old Buriganga, Dhaka South City Corporation is demarcating the river basin or river border and that means it will evict all illegal establishments it encounters here, said the mayor.

Regarding the ‘Dengue outbreak’, the mayor played it down saying DSCC had succeeded in controlling the menace in the city through its continuous activities.

He rather deferred to climate change as the culprit behind the present spike or outbreak, pointing out that of the 642 dengue cases reported across the country on Monday, only 40 were from the DSCC area.
