Dhaka: Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following a decisive victory in the board directors’ election held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tamim, who had been leading the BCB’s ad hoc committee for the past two months, initially secured a director’s position from the Dhaka clubs category by receiving the highest number of votes. He was subsequently elected BCB president unopposed as he was the sole candidate for the position. With his election, Tamim becomes the 18th president and the sixth elected president in the history of the BCB. Fahim Sinha has been named vice-president.
In the election, a total of 16 candidates competed in Category-2, representing Dhaka-based clubs, with 12 candidates successfully elected as directors. Tamim led the poll with 73 votes, followed by Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed and Israfil Khasru, each securing 72 votes. Masuduzzaman received 70 votes, while Yasir Mohammad Faisal Ashiq obtained 68 votes.
The other successful candidates in this category were Fahim Sinha, Asif Rabbani, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Rafiqul Islam Babu, Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed Shamim, Shahnian Tanim, and Shafiq Ahmed Salam. The candidates who were not successful included Borhanul Pappu, Amjad Hossain, Fayazur Rahman Mitu, and Major Imroz Ahmed (retd).
The newly elected 25-member BCB board is composed of 10 representatives from the divisional and district cricket associations (Category-1), 12 representatives from Dhaka clubs (Category-2), and one representative from Category-3.
The elected BCB directors for Category-1 include Sayeed Bin Zaman and SM Abdullah Al Fuad from Dhaka Division, Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Moyeen Uddin Chowdhury from Chattogram Division, Shafiqul Alam and Shantanu Islam from Khulna Division, Mir Shakrul Alam from Rajshahi Division, Mirza Faisal Amin from Rangpur Division, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury from Sylhet Division, and Mizanur Rahman from Barishal Division.
In Category-2, the elected directors are Tamim Iqbal, Masuduzzaman, Fahim Sinha, Asif Rabbani, Yasir Mohammad Faisal Ashiq, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Israfil Khasru, Rafiqul Islam, Sarkar Mahbub Ahmed Shamim, Shahnian Tanim, Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed, and Shafiq Ahmed.
For Category-3, the elected representative is Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir.
