Dhaka: Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam became the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in Test cricket, surpassing Shakib Al Hasan during Day 4 of the second and final Test against Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the landmark achievement appeared inevitable after Taijul equaled Shakib’s tally by claiming 4-76 in Ireland’s first innings. His impressive performance contributed significantly to Bangladesh’s dominance, as they posted a formidable total of 476 all out and bowled out the visitors for 265, thus securing a substantial 211-run lead.

Further strengthening their position, Bangladesh declared their second innings at 297-4, setting an improbable 509-run target for Ireland to chase for victory.

Taijul surpassed Shakib’s record in the sixth over of Ireland’s second innings, trapping captain Andy Balbirnie leg-before for 13 runs. He further extended his record by dismissing Paul Stirling, bringing his tally to 248 wickets and counting.

Shakib had reached his milestone of 246 wickets in 71 Tests, a record Taijul eclipsed in just 57 matches, underscoring his exceptional skill and consistency on the field.
