Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring media freedom, highlighting ongoing efforts to form a Media Commission. He made these remarks during a courtesy call by British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, at his office in the Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Swapon sought the United Kingdom's cooperation in this endeavor and expressed interest in utilizing the experience of the UK's media regulatory authority, the Office of Communications (Ofcom). He noted that Ofcom's experience could be instrumental in developing media sector policies in Bangladesh. High Commissioner Cooke assured the minister of the UK's support and briefed him on Ofcom's overall activities.
Later, Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh, Reto Renggli, also visited Minister Swapon. During their meeting, the minister reiterated the government's dedication to media freedom while simultaneously aiming to protect citizens from misinformation. He underscored the importance of Switzerland's advanced experience and technological support in tackling these challenges.
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Yasser Khan Choudhury, highlighted the dual role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating opportunities and posing verification and security challenges. He urged collaborative efforts to address these issues and invited the Swiss ambassador to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh's promising sectors.
