Dhaka: Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has emphasized the importance of developing corrosion-resistant and climate-resilient coastal infrastructure for the long-term security and economic development of Bangladesh. This was conveyed during a seminar titled ‘Corrosion-Resistant Coastal Infrastructure in Bangladesh and Unveiling of Project Management Training Manual (Second Edition) and Certificate Awarding,’ held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Anee highlighted the necessity of using advanced construction materials, climate-resilient design, and sustainable engineering practices to protect coastal regions from environmental threats. He pointed out the challenges faced by coastal areas, including high population density leading to environmental issues such as reduced agricultural land, increased numbers of fishermen, overuse of coastal resources, water pollution, and destruction of mangrove forests.

The minister noted that rising sea levels are contributing to coastal erosion and saline water intrusion, which harm crops, increase marine pollution, and adversely impact the coastal ecosystem. He called for the integration of technology to combat these issues and emphasized the importance of integrated planning and sustainable management.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the government is reviving the canal excavation program initiated by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Anee mentioned. Over the next five years, plans include excavating and re-excavating 20,000 kilometers of rivers, canals, ponds, and water bodies, as well as planting 25 crore trees to establish a green belt in coastal areas.

Minister Anee stressed the need for coastal zone management rules and special management plans to protect the environment. He also advocated for legislation to safeguard agricultural land, ensure proper use of groundwater, and modernize waste management systems. An integrated plan is essential for achieving balanced development in both human settlements and the natural environment in coastal areas.

The seminar was organized in celebration of the 78th founding anniversary of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. The event was chaired by Engineer Muhammad Shafiqul Islam Khokon, Chairman of the Civil Engineering Division of IEB, and featured speeches from Chairman of IEB and RAJUK Engineer Mohammad Riazul Islam, LGED Chief Engineer Belal Hossain, and Professor Dr. Tarek Uddin.
