Dhaka: German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Rdiger Lotz has praised the interim government's efforts to hold fair, free, and credible national polls, emphasizing that a successful democratic election in Bangladesh will have impacts far beyond its borders.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Lotz highlighted the significance of the upcoming elections as Bangladesh prepares to hold the world's largest democratic elections in 2026, with more than 127 million people eligible to vote. He remarked that a successful election would reinstate Bangladesh in the league of democratic nations in Asia and globally, especially at a time when democracy faces challenges in many regions.
Speaking at the Day of German Unity reception at the Franco-German Embassy, the Ambassador acknowledged Bangladesh's political transition and stressed the importance of a transparent and credible election process. He assured Germany's readiness to enhance relations, noting the interim government's efforts in this crucial phase for Bangladesh.
The Ambassador highlighted the long-standing partnership between Bangladesh and Germany, emphasizing strong trade ties, growing investment interests, and expanding cooperation in sustainable development, climate adaptation, humanitarian support, cultural exchange, and higher education. He noted that European and German companies are seeking new partners in Asia, seeing Bangladesh's potential for increased trade and investment.
Dr. Lotz pointed out Bangladesh's impressive growth rates, emerging middle class, young population, and favorable geo-economic location. He expressed his goal of attracting more business to Bangladesh by improving ease of doing business through clear rules, good governance, and improved infrastructure.
He reaffirmed Germany's commitment to deepening cooperation, citing high-level exchanges, rising investment prospects, and continued development assistance through organizations like GIZ and KfW. Dr. Lotz mentioned recent engagements between Bangladesh and Germany, including meetings with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and visits by senior German officials.
The envoy stressed the importance of addressing global challenges like climate change, asserting that cooperation between Germany, Bangladesh, and regional partners is essential for adaptation and mitigation efforts. He expressed hope for greater cooperation as Bangladesh positions itself as a regional stability pillar.
Dr. Lotz also praised the increasing number of Bangladeshi students pursuing higher education in Germany, describing it as a "win-win situation" for both countries. He reaffirmed Germany's view of Bangladesh as a crucial partner in Asia and a regional stability pillar.
