Dhaka: Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Brigadier General Muhammad Jahed Kamal stated that strong winds significantly contributed to the delay in controlling the large fire that erupted at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) today. “The fire spread faster due to the high wind speed,” he informed reporters during a site visit after the fire was subdued.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the fire began around 2:30pm and was not brought under control until 9:18pm, following nearly seven hours of intense firefighting efforts. The FSCD chief highlighted that the presence of multiple small chambers, known as khops, within the cargo facility posed an additional challenge in combating the blaze.
“We had to control the fire chamber by chamber in order to move forward,” Brigadier General Kamal explained, emphasizing the complexity involved in tackling the inferno.
