The ideals of great woman Rokeya would continue to inspire the womenfolk in ensuring their education, rights, dignity and empowerment, speakers said here today.
They were addressing at a discussion arranged on the first day of the three-day observance programmes of Begum Rokeya Day-2016 by district administration at her birthplace village Pairaband under Mithapukur upazila.
Earlier in the morning, Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hassan Ahmed inaugurated it by placing wreaths at Begum Rokeya Smritistambha in Pairaband village.
Later, wreaths were placed there by Awami League (AL), Begum Rokeya Smriti Sangshad, Sheikh Russell Smriti Sangshad, Begum Rokeya Degree College, Begum Rokeya Memorial Academy, RDRS Bangladesh, Begum Rokeya Memorial Gils' High School, Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Sangskritik Gosthi and other organisations paying rich tribute to Rokeya.
A milad mahfil was arranged at Pairaband Jam-e-Mosque seeking divine blessings for departed soul of Rokeya followed by blood donation, blood group tests, traditional Rokeya Fair', screening of documentary films and cultural function.
The Divisional Commissioner attended there as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Anwar in the chair.
Deputy Inspector General Khondker Golam Faruk, Zila Parisahd Administrator Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and AL leader Mozammel Haque Mantu Mian addressed as special guests while Mithapukur UNO Mamun-Ar-Rashid gave the welcome speech.
Former Head of Bengali Department of Begum Rokeya Government College Professor Shah Alam presented the keynote paper on 'Spreading Female Education and Gender Parity'. Gender Specialist Shahin Rahman took part as the main discussant.
The chief guest termed Rokeya as a great philosopher and human rights activist.
