Dhaka: Labour and Employment Ministry Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hussain has announced that the simultaneous ratification of three International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions represents a historic decision aimed at reinforcing workers' rights and ensuring workplace safety across the nation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the landmark decision was celebrated at an event on December 4, hosted at the Foreign Service Academy, State Guest House Sugandha. The event was a joint effort by the Ministry of Labour and Employment and ILO Bangladesh. As the chief guest, Dr. Sakhawat Hussain highlighted that this achievement transcends legal milestones, sending a strong signal to the international community about the interim government's dedication to maintaining workers' dignity, safety, and rights.
He further elaborated that the timing of the decision is crucial, coinciding with Bangladesh's preparations for graduating from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status. This move underscores the nation's commitment to ethical and sustainable development on the global stage.
Dr. Sakhawat Hussain also pointed out that among the three ratified conventions, Convention 155 (Occupational Safety and Health) and Convention 187 (Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health) are essential ILO conventions. With the addition of Convention 190 (Violence and Harassment in the Place of Work), Bangladesh distinguishes itself as the only South Asian country to have ratified all ten of the ILO's fundamental conventions.
Labour and Employment Secretary Dr. Md Sanwar Jahan Bhuiyan emphasized that the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) will be further empowered to ensure occupational health and safety for the workforce.
European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller commended Bangladesh's ratification of the conventions and its efforts to bolster its global market position. He expressed the EU's appreciation for Bangladesh's active role in strengthening international trade and cooperation.
ILO Bangladesh Country Director Max Tunon also described the ratifications as "a historic moment" for Bangladesh, reflecting a significant step forward for the country.
