Dhaka: Bangladesh head coach Phill Simmons has expressed his anticipation for a century from Saif Hassan, who has emerged as a ‘surprise package’ during the team’s recent tour in the United Arab Emirates. Saif’s performance stood out amidst a lackluster display by his teammates.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Simmons acknowledged Saif’s unexpected prowess with the ball, admitting that he did not anticipate such a display from the batter. However, he emphasized that Saif’s batting abilities were already known to the team, and his recent performances have only highlighted his potential. Saif’s consistent performances have left Simmons optimistic about his prospects, particularly in terms of scoring his first One Day International (ODI) century.

Simmons also mentioned the strategic advantage of utilizing Saif as a sixth bowler, alongside Shamim Patwari. This flexibility can enhance the team’s combination and provide depth in their bowling options. The coach noted that both Saif and Shamim could fill the role of the sixth bowler, offering valuable overs.

Highlighting Saif’s versatility, Simmons pointed out that Saif’s ability to bat in various positions allows the team to consider different strategic combinations. Saif stepped up as an opener during the Asia Cup and the series against Afghanistan when Parvez Hossain Emon was sidelined due to injury.

Simmons further elaborated on the team’s ongoing efforts to establish a stable opening partnership, a crucial component for their World Cup preparations. The coach views this as a building process aimed at forming a solid foundation for the 2027 World Cup. While the team is still searching for the ideal pairing, Simmons remains committed to developing the right combination, acknowledging that player performance and form will dictate changes along the way.
