Chattogram: Two alleged drug addicts were detained for assaulting an on-duty Sub-Inspector (SI) at Chattogram’s Patenga Sea Beach for stopping a group of young men from consuming hemp last night. The attackers beat up Yousuf Ali, an SI, and snatched his mobile phone, wallet, and walkie-talkie.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a patrol police team, in cooperation with locals, rescued SI Yousuf Ali along with the snatched goods, including a knife and motorcycle, soon after the incident. Police also detained the attackers, identified as Saimon, 27, and Ali Emad Prokash Tafsir Emad, 22, as confirmed by additional deputy police commissioner (Public Relation and Media) Mahmuda Begum today.
The incident took place around 11:30 pm near Chapra Ghat in Patenga. SI Yousuf Ali of Patenga police outer ring road check post was on duty in uniform at that time and noticed a group of young men consuming hemp on the beach. When he confronted them, they confessed their mistake and apologized before leaving the scene. However, about an hour later, the same group returned with more accomplices. As SI Yousuf was heading toward his patrol vehicle, they surrounded him and demanded to see his ID card, accusing him of being a fake police officer.
The situation quickly deteriorated, and the group physically assaulted him, taking away his walkie-talkie, mobile phone, and wallet. Mahmuda Begum stated that locals were seen questioning the attackers after detaining them, according to video footage. She explained, “They organized a mob and attacked the SI after he barred them from consuming drugs. They orchestrated the incident by accusing the SI of being fake police personnel.”
Police recovered the snatched goods belonging to the SI, and they also recovered a motorcycle and a small knife from the attackers’ possessions. A case was filed under the Speedy Trial Act with Patenga model police station. Police are conducting operations to apprehend other criminals involved in the incident.
