Sheikh Russel Cup Invitational Team Chess starts tomorrow in capital

The six-nation Sheikh Russel Cup Invitational Team Chess Championship 2022, sponsored by Saif Powertec Limited, begins in the capital on Thursday (October 13) at the sports hall of Bangladesh Chess Federation (BCF).

 

Six countries –Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and hosts Bangladesh will take part in the invitational team chess event.

 

Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Mesbah Uddin will inaugurate the meet at a function at the conference-room of the National Sports Council (NSC) here Thursday afternoon.

 

Bangladesh Chess Federation organised the tournament on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, that some observe as Sheikh Russell Day.

 

Bangladesh Chess Federation General Secretary Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim disclosed details of the meet at a press conference at the sports hall of the federation on Wednesday

 

BCF Joint Secretary Masudur Rahman Mallik Dipu, executive members Zakir Ahmed and Mahmuda Hoque Chowdhury Moly and Chief Arbiter Md. Haroon Or Rashid were also present on the occasion

 

All the teams will initially participate in the round robin league system. After the first phase, top three teams will play in the super league, also on round robin league format.

 

The game will be held at the federation sports hall from 3 pm every day

 

A total of US$ 10,000 will be awarded to the winners, where the champion team will receive US$ 4,000, the runners-up team US$ 3,000, the third-placed team US$ 2,000 and the fourth-placed team US$ 1,000.
