Deputy Leader in Parliament and Awami League Presidium Member Matia Chowdhury today said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has established women's right in Bangladesh.

"Women are working in different positions with their talent and efficiency," she said while addressing a discussion as the chief guest at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) here.

DRU and a social organization Friendship jointly organized the discussion titled 'Digital Journalism in Bangladesh: the challenges and possibilities for women' at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium, marking the International Women's Day 2023.

Matia said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has created opportunities of various employments for women and she is working for the country and its people.

She said the women played significant roles during any crises in the country, including the Liberation War in 1971.

She also said the struggle is going for establishing women's right.

Matia Chowdhury inaugurated the function by cutting a cake.

Friendship founder Runa Khan, President of the National Press Club (JPC) Farida Yasmin and Founding Director of Bangladesh Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BWCCI) Nazma Jamaluddin spoke at the discussion as special guests with DRU President Mursalin Nomani in the chair.

DRU General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel delivered the welcome speech in the function while Women Affairs Secretary Mariam Moni Sejuti conducted it.

In the function, four women from Friendship's working areas were awarded as 'Women of Valour' for their outstanding contributions to their communities.

The Women of Valour awards, which was introduced in 2022, are given to outstanding female performers for remarkable contributions to marginalised people living in hard-to-reach and climate-impacted areas under four categories, representing each of Friendship's commitments to stakeholders: Saving Lives, Poverty Alleviation, Climate Adaptation and Empowerment.

This year's winners are: Mosammat Mariam in the Saving Lives category, Mosammat Sufia Khatun in the Poverty Alleviation, Mosammat Shahinur Begum in the Climate Adaptation and Rahima Begum in the Empowerment.

Later, a cultural programme was held by Friendship's Inclusive Citizenship sector while members of the char theatre performed in the event.

At the onset of the programme, a rally was brought out from the DRU premises as part of celebrating the women's day.
