Shariatpur Farmers Intensify Onion and Garlic Cultivation Amid Rising Input Costs

Shariatpur:Farmers in Shariatpur district are currently engaged in the cultivation of onions and garlic, marking the start of the winter crop farming season as monsoon waters recede.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, despite challenges posed by rising prices of seeds and fertilizers, farmers are optimistic about achieving a good harvest if weather conditions remain favorable. The local Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target of cultivating onions on 4,700 hectares and garlic on 5,250 hectares this season, offering technical support to farmers to meet these goals.

The district's soil and agro-climatic conditions are conducive to onion and garlic cultivation, with fertile loamy soils that retain moisture and provide adequate drainage. Farmers are employing the no-tillage method, which reduces costs by eliminating the need for repeated ploughing. The delay in water recession this year postponed the start of the season, but planting activities have now intensified.

The DAE is actively working with farmers, providing technical advice and monitoring markets to prevent artificial shortages and price increases. However, farmers remain concerned about the rising costs of agricultural inputs, urging authorities to ensure fair market prices to offset these expenses.

Azmat Ullah, a farmer from North Dubaldia village, expressed hope for a favorable harvest and emphasized the importance of receiving fair prices for their efforts. The DAE continues to support farmers with field-level activities to achieve production targets and maintain crop quality.
