Shamed for unpaid school fees, 8th-grader kills herself in Chandpur

An eighth grader committed suicide by hanging herself, after being shamed by teachers for not paying school fees in Faridganj upazila in Chandpur on Friday night.

The deceased was Panna Akter, 13, student of Rampur Bazar Majidia High School in Putia, and daughter of UAE expatriate Sohel Talukder of Paschim Char Dukhia union.

The incident occurred around 9 pm at their house in Putia area in the upazila.

Panna’s mother Hasina Begum said, “Panna’s father could not send any money for the last three months as he had no work in UAE and Tk 1,630 fees of the school remained unpaid. The teachers of the school often mocked, shamed Panna and, unable to tolerate it anymore, my daughter might have ended her life.”

Mhommad Shahid Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Faridganj police station, said the body was recovered around 12 am, informed by the locals.

“The body has been sent for autopsy and a case of unnatural death has been filed in this regard,” said the OC.
