Shakib guards against complacency ahead of Afghanistan Test

DHAKA, Bangladesh Test skipper Shakib Al Hasan refused to underestimate Afghanistan despite being much ahead of them in terms of experience and home advantage.

Ahead of Bangladesh's first Test against Afghanistan that begins from

September 5 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, Shakib said

the Afghanistan spinners have the ability to replicate their limited over

cricket's performance to Test cricket also.

And therefore, he warns his teammates not to feel complacence and play

their best cricket in a bid to win the Test match.

The way Afghanistan have been improving, it is challenging for us to play

against them in any format of cricket, Shakib Al Hasan said in a programme

at a local hotel in the city on Sunday.

They have some quality cricketers who could pose massive danger to us. We

have to play our best cricket and play well team-wise as well. Just some

individual one or two good performance can't win you the Test. We have to

play well as a team, he said.

In ODI and T20 cricket, Afghanistan gave Bangladesh some horrendous

moment, specially through their star spinner Rashid Khan who will debut as

team's captain in the series against Bangladesh.

Both the teams played eight one-day matches where Bangladesh were

triumphed five times and the Afghans won three matches and the four T20Is

that Bangladesh played against them, were able to claim only one victory with

three defeats.

Rashid Khan and co. however was not a force in Test cricket. They have

attained the Test status in 2018 and played only two Tests-against India and

Ireland. They have won against Ireland, who also got Test status along with

them, Rashid and the other spinners couldn't quite replicate their ODI and

T20 success in Test cricket as a bowler.

Since Test is all together a different format, it is believed Rashid and

other spinners who tormented Bangladesh in ODI and T20 cricket couldn't be

successful in the longer version format. And hence Bangladesh is believed to

be absolutely favourite in the match.

But Shakib differed with the public belief, saying that they shouldn't

underestimate the ability of Rashid Khan even in Test format. And there is no

one better than Shakib to know Rashid Khan well since the duo were teammates

during their stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL.

As far as experience is concerned, we are ahead of them. But he (Rashid)

is a world class bowler. Even though he played just two Test matches, there

is no way to deny that he is a proven performer. He was successful in shorter

version cricket and there is no reason to think that he won't be successful

in Test format.

The mentality is clear: when we'll play any match, we think we should win

it. So against Afghanistan there will be the same thinking. I am not even

worried about the wicket also. Whatever the wicket is, we have to play to our

true potential and we have to win the game.

As Tamim Iqbal took a break from the series, there is void in the opening

slot. Shakib said discussion is going to find out a suitable player to

replace Tamim Iqbal.

There was discussion regarding this. We are thinking who can be suitable

for this position. After discussion, we'll select one.

With Test championship approaching fast for Bangladesh, Shakib said if

they need even a new player to win the game, they will not hesitate to

include him.

This is not matter who is young or new or experienced. We would play

every match to win it, no matter that they are big team or small team. When

we play against any team, we don't think that we are taking any particular

player to prepare him or watching his ability. We take him because we want to

win the match through him. So, we will take new player if we feel that he can

win us the match.
