Dhaka: Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on Monday accused the ruling BNP of neglecting its commitment to institutionalize democracy, emphasizing that the July 2024 mass uprising had provided a significant opportunity to establish democracy in the country.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Shafiqur, who is also the ameer of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, criticized the previous Awami League government for depriving people of their voting rights, justice, social security, and fundamental rights. He noted that democracy is not just a temporary means of forming a government but is essential for ensuring fundamental rights, social justice, freedom of expression, and the rule of law.
Shafiqur highlighted Bangladesh's long history of sacrifice and struggle, noting that the democratic rights of the people have often been compromised due to authoritarian attitudes and abuse of power. He recalled the July uprising, where students and citizens from all walks of life shed their blood, creating a pivotal moment for the country's democratic future.
He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding democracy to prevent a return to authoritarianism, exploitation, and discrimination. He urged the nation to build a discrimination-free and humane Bangladesh that aligns with the aspirations of its people. Shafiqur reiterated that democracy is the only path to creating a just society grounded in honesty and human values.
On the occasion of International Democracy Day, Shafiqur expressed Jamaat's commitment to strengthening democracy by establishing equality, the rule of law, citizens' rights, and freedom of expression. He cautioned against the dangers of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and crossfire, calling for a transparent and people-oriented governance system.
The opposition leader also urged for the implementation of the referendum verdict to free the administration from partisan influences and to eliminate bribery, corruption, extortion, and land grabbing. He called on people from all walks of life to unite in the fight against injustice and to work towards a discrimination-free and humane Bangladesh.
