Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has condemned the attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur. “I strongly condemn the heinous attack on Nurul Haque Nur, the leader of Gono Odhikar Parishad and a courageous voice of our time,” he wrote in a Facebook post last night.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shafiqul Alam highlighted Nur’s significant contributions as a student leader, particularly noting his role in the anti-quota reform movement of 2018, which inspired many to stand against injustice and demand fairness. Nur’s leadership during this movement was described as historic and influential.

The press secretary also mentioned Nur’s involvement with his organization during the July uprising. Nur and his group were seen as embodying the fight for democracy, accountability, and dignity. Shafiqul Alam recounted the events of Nur’s arrest and the subsequent torture he endured while in custody during the uprising, describing these actions as severe violations of fundam
ental human rights and an attack on democratic aspirations by the current regime.

In his statement, Shafiqul Alam expressed confidence that the authorities would investigate the attack on Nur.
