Dhaka:The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Textiles and Jute has recommended mechanising operations under the Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board and facilitating easier access to essential materials for marginal weavers.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the committee made these recommendations during its first meeting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, chaired by Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia, MP.

The committee also stressed the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in the tender process by preventing repeated awards to the same institution, thus allowing opportunities for other eligible institutions. Additionally, it suggested involving local MPs in efforts to make yarn, dyes, and other raw materials more accessible to marginal weavers through associations or appointed dealers.

Further, the committee recommended auditing the operations of the Bangladesh Handloom Board's office in Dinajpur to confirm the status of its associated land before proceeding with any necessary actions.

During the meeting, officials reviewed the activities of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, presenting an overview of their operations and briefing the committee on the ministry's initiatives as part of the government's 180-day program and the progress of ongoing projects. The committee also emphasized aligning all activities with the prime minister's election manifesto.

The meeting began with Chairman Md Akhtaruzzaman Mia paying tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, former BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and the martyrs of the Liberation War, as well as expressing condolences for those affected by the July 2024 movement.

Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, MP, State Minister Md Shariful Alam, MP, and several committee members and officials from relevant departments attended the meeting.
