Pirojpur:Police retrieved the body of a schoolgirl found hanging in her home in Bhandaria upazila on Tuesday.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the deceased was identified as Mahira Akter, a Class-X student at Bhandaria Thana Girls' Secondary School. Mahira was the daughter of Md Alamgir Hossain, a retired librarian from Dhaka University, currently working in business in Dhaka. Her mother passed away when she was three, and she has since lived with her stepmother after her father's remarriage.

Locals have alleged that Mahira suffered neglect and mental abuse from her stepmother, which they believe might have contributed to her decision to take her own life. However, her stepmother, Sumaiya Akter, reported that Mahira had dinner and went to bed as usual on Monday night. The following morning, she discovered Mahira hanging from a ceiling fan and immediately informed the neighbors, who called the police. The authorities then recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy.

Sumaiya also mentioned that Mahira had been in a relationship with a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Saudi Arabia, which ended about two months ago. She speculated that the breakup could have influenced Mahira's decision.

Bhandaria Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Dewan Jaglul Hasan, confirmed that an investigation is underway.
