Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday announced a series of initiatives aimed at ensuring the welfare of police personnel, including honorary promotions upon retirement and potential overtime allowances. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to transform the police into a modern and people-oriented force.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Salahuddin addressed the ‘Welfare Parade’ during Police Week-2026 at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in the Rajarbagh Police Lines. He assured that the government would meet all reasonable demands of police members in accordance with the country’s financial capabilities. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the event as the chief guest, alongside Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Monzur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir.

Highlighting the benefits related to retirement, Salahuddin noted that many police constables complete up to 40 years of service without receiving promotions. To remedy this, the government plans to introduce honorary promotions at retirement, contingent upon special policies and satisfactory service records. Eligible constables could receive an honorary promotion to assistant sub-inspector (ASI), ASIs to sub-inspector (SI), and SIs to inspector upon retirement.

The government is also considering the introduction of special overtime allowances for police personnel who work extended hours under a special policy framework. This benefit would apply to officers from the rank of inspector down to constable and is intended to improve morale and service quality.

Additionally, plans are underway to modernize central and divisional police hospitals to enhance physical and mental healthcare services for police members, recognizing their demanding work schedules. Salahuddin mentioned the possibility of constructing additional modern hospital facilities following necessary assessments.

Regarding accommodation and infrastructure, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving accommodation shortages and improving office facilities for various police units. Land acquisition and funding for these projects are prioritized by the government.

Salahuddin also commented on the current law and order situation, noting visible progress over the past two months. Special drives are targeting identified terrorists, extortionists, and drug traffickers. He emphasized the importance of advanced training for police personnel to address evolving crimes related to technological advancements, such as cybercrime, online gambling, and money laundering.

A committee has been formed to propose updates to laws tackling gambling, cybercrime, and financial crimes more effectively. Existing laws will also be amended to curb mob culture. Salahuddin instructed police personnel to perform their duties in alignment with public expectations.
