Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed strong criticism against the Awami League (AL), characterizing its history as one marked by looting and terrorism. Speaking at the Comilla South District BNP biannual conference held at the Comilla Town Hall, Salahuddin accused the AL of engaging in looting, money laundering, and undermining democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized the alleged atrocities committed by the Awami League, claiming that the party was responsible for the deaths of 1,400 people during the July uprising and for injuring more than 20,000 individuals. He urged attendees not to forget the sacrifices made in the struggle against what he described as the oppressive regime of Hasina.
Further, Salahuddin criticized Sheikh Hasina for seeking refuge in Delhi while engaging in business with the “spirit of 71.” He dismissed the notion of leveraging the spirit of the liberation war and religion for political purposes, advocating instead for a politically informed electorate that would reject such practices.
Salahuddin also highlighted the achievements of the BNP, describing its history as one of capturing the ideas of the people of Bangladesh through political reforms. He called Tarique Rahman, the BNP Acting Chairman, a pioneer of reforms, referencing the 31 points announced by Rahman as pivotal to the country’s progress. Salahuddin maintained that reform is an ongoing process open to logical proposals.
Addressing the contentious issue of elections, Salahuddin acknowledged the demands for a trial of the July murders and institutional reforms before elections. Nonetheless, he asserted that the people of Bangladesh are eager for a fair election and a democratic government. He called for justice against those responsible for genocide and enforced disappearances, suggesting an increase in tribunals to expedite the process.
Salahuddin also urged BNP leaders and workers to actively counter propaganda against the party on social media, emphasizing the importance of being proactive in digital spaces.
The conference was presided over by Comilla South District BNP convener Zakaria Taher Sumon, with Member Secretary Mahmud Wasim moderating the event. It featured speeches from BNP Chairperson’s Advisor Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Haji Aminur Rashid Yasin, and other notable BNP figures, including Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu and Organizing Secretary Principal Selim Bhuiyan.
