Sylhet: Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd.) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain today inaugurated the Bholaganj Land Port in Companyganj upazila, aiming to expand border trade and promote regional economic development.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bholaganj Land Port becomes the 24th land port in the country, established under the Bangladesh Land Port Authority with financial backing from the World Bank and the Ministry of Shipping. In his inaugural speech, Sakhawat Hossain emphasized the port’s potential to open new opportunities for business and trade in the border areas, alongside fostering employment and economic growth.
The new port is expected to enhance the economic activities of the Sylhet region and strengthen bilateral trade with neighboring states, Sakhawat Hossain noted. He highlighted that the Bholaganj Land Port is set to elevate not only commercial activities but also the communication systems and economic activities of the entire region.
Sakhawat Hossain expressed optimism that the port’s opening would improve the quality of life for local residents, invigorate business and trade, and initiate sustainable changes in the national economy.
The event was attended by Shipping Secretary Dr Nurun Nahar Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner Md Sarwar Alam, and Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman Mohammad Manzarul Mannan, among others. Following the inauguration, the adviser toured various facilities and infrastructure at the port, providing necessary guidance to officials.
