Dhaka: Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Md Aminul Islam on Thursday revealed that the prosecution has obtained secret information indicating potential plans to sabotage the tribunal. He made these statements during a briefing with reporters at his office.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the tribunal's security measures have been significantly enhanced as a precaution. "We have some secret information that there may be an attempt to carry out sabotage here when the trials of influential accused are nearing their conclusion or when verdicts are awaiting," Islam stated. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to bolster security and are actively monitoring the situation.
The chief prosecutor also addressed ongoing investigations against several journalists accused of aiding and inciting crimes against humanity. He confirmed that a formal complaint had been lodged, and investigations are underway. Currently, three journalists are in custody as part of this probe.
Islam emphasized that if preliminary evidence of crimes against humanity surfaces against any other journalist, formal charges will be pursued, and they will be brought to trial before the tribunal.
In a significant development concerning the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi, a lead has emerged during a separate investigation. Islam mentioned that any further information or pertinent evidence related to the Sagar-Runi murder would be collected and handed over to the appropriate investigators.
Additionally, the chief prosecutor announced the intention to appeal for an increased sentence for former information minister Hasanul Haq Inu. This will occur after the full text of the tribunal's verdict in his case is received, allowing for a comprehensive review and subsequent legal action.
