Dhaka: Prime Minister's Information Adviser, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman, emphasized the need for Bangladesh to evolve into a nation where journalists can express their views without fear and deliver accurate information, eliminating the necessity for activism in journalism.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr Zahed made these remarks while speaking as a special guest at a discussion organized by the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) and Journalist Abdus Salam Smriti Sangsad. The event, held at the PIB auditorium, commemorated the 116th birth anniversary of Abdus Salam, the founding editor of PIB and The Bangladesh Observer. The program was graced by the presence of BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as the chief guest.
Dr Zahed highlighted the dual roles that journalists play-both as professionals and activists, particularly when national interests are at stake. He noted that in countries like Bangladesh, where democracy is not yet fully institutionalized, journalistic activism occasionally becomes necessary.
Reflecting on the past 17 years, Dr Zahed criticized journalists for not fulfilling their roles effectively, accusing them of contributing to the country's decline through sycophancy. He stressed that journalists should have at least upheld a standard of professional journalism, even if they chose not to engage in activism.
He further remarked that suppressing freedom of expression is counterproductive for a democratic government aspiring to be re-elected and is characteristic of authoritarian regimes. Dr Zahed recalled how similar constraints during Abdus Salam's lifetime led to journalistic activism.
The adviser urged that Bangladesh honor the legacy of Abdus Salam and strive to ensure the nation never experiences another mass uprising. He advocated for a democratic state where government change is possible through elections, and emphasized the need to separate journalism from disinformation, acknowledging its presence even in mainstream media.
The discussion was presided over by PIB Director General Faruk Wasif, with Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam among the distinguished attendees.
