Safeguarding food quality and safety a priority says Health Minister

Health Minister Michalis Damianos assured on Friday of the authorities’ readiness to safeguard the safety and quality of food and to protect citizens’ health, in a message on the occasion of the World Food Safety Day.

This year’s day focuses on food safety and food safety emergencies by highlighting the importance of prevention.

The World Health Organization says that 600 million people worldwide are annually affected by about two hundred different types of foodborne diseases, which come from eating unsafe food, contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals.

This fact also results in 420,000 deaths per year. Both these illnesses and deaths could have been avoided.

The Health Ministry pointed out in a press release that safeguarding food quality requires specific efforts by policy makers, the countries’ food safety agencies, as well as by farmers, producers, food business operators and consumers.

It also stressed that the EU has one of the strictest food safety systems in the world, ensurin
g and promoting a sustainable environment for safe food both at the European and the international level.
