Dhaka: The SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC) has called for a united push towards regenerative agriculture across the region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, leaders of the SAARC Agriculture Centre convened a three-day Regional Consultation Meeting titled "Promotion of Regenerative Agriculture in SAARC Member States," held virtually from 4 to 6 August, 2025. This significant event brought together distinguished delegates from six SAARC countries, agricultural research organizations, universities, and several international agencies to foster cooperation and develop strategies aimed at promoting regenerative agriculture in the region.
The consultation sought to enhance regional collaboration and policy alignment to address the escalating environmental challenges in agriculture. The focus was on restoring degraded soils, enhancing biodiversity, and building climate-resilient agri-food systems to ensure long-term food security across South Asia.
Ambassador Abdul Motaleb Sarker, Additional Secretary (SAARC and BIMSTEC) of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Bangladesh, graced the opening session as the chief guest. In his remarks, he emphasized the urgent need to restore soil health and biodiversity across South Asia through regenerative approaches. He urged for the integration of digital tools and practical strategies, calling on SAC to spearhead this regional movement for agricultural transformation.
Dr. Md Harunur Rashid, Director of the SAARC Agriculture Centre, chaired the inaugural session and delivered the welcome speech. He reaffirmed SAC's steadfast commitment to championing sustainable, climate-smart, and farmer-centric agricultural practices across South Asia. Tanvir Ahmad Torophder, Director (ARD and SDF) at the SAARC Secretariat, Nepal, attended as the special guest, highlighting the economic viability of regenerative agriculture, noting its dual benefits of improving soil and environmental health while delivering financial returns to farmers.
Throughout the three-day event, six technical sessions featured over 20 expert presentations on various aspects of regenerative agriculture. Delegates from SAARC member states, including focal point scientists and national specialists, presented country-specific papers, contributing to a comprehensive understanding and exchange of knowledge on this critical subject.
