Dhaka: Environment, Forests, Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today called upon students to dedicate their talents to building an eco-centric sustainable Bangladesh. She stressed adopting an eco-centric approach across all sectors.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana emphasized the need for consuming less, polluting less, reusing, recycling, and ensuring fair distribution of resources. She stated that redefining the relationship with nature is essential to break free from the cycle of environmental degradation. Rizwana made these remarks as the chief guest at The Daily Star-HSBC 24th O and A Level Awards Presentation Ceremony 2025 held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Exhibition Centre in Purbachal, Dhaka.
Addressing the gathering of students, Rizwana expressed that what once seemed impossible is now within reach, owing to the vision and promise of students. She highlighted that a new Bangladesh awaits, defined by collective responsibility and a commitment to sustainable development, rather than individual success alone.
The environment adviser stressed that while academic achievements open global opportunities, true success lies in serving one’s own country. She urged students to pursue higher education and gain experience abroad if needed but to contribute to Bangladesh by returning home. Rizwana questioned the continuation of brain drain and the lack of skilled individuals driving progress, urging the brightest minds to invest their talents locally.
Rizwana further encouraged students to rethink traditional notions of development, emphasizing that development should not be measured merely by personal possessions. She advocated for a vision centering on nature, responsible consumption, and fundamental environmental stewardship. Citing the widespread use of plastic bottles at the event, she highlighted the urgent need for behavioral change and encouraged reusable alternatives to reduce plastic waste.
In closing, Rizwana congratulated the awardees on their achievements and reminded them of their greater calling to love and serve their country selflessly. She urged the students to pass forward the benefits they have received from Bangladesh to the next generation.
The event was attended by Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul as the chief guest of the first session and presided over by the Editor of the Daily Star, Mahfuz Anam. Senior officials from HSBC and The Daily Star, along with students, teachers, and parents from across the country, gathered to celebrate the achievements. A total of 2,391 students were honored, with 176 receiving special recognition for world-best and country-best results, and six students awarded for attaining the highest distinctions.
The ceremony began with a tribute to the principals of the participating schools, who received crests for their leadership and contributions. Distinguished guests also delivered inspiring speeches on the occasion.
