Dhaka: Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has emphasized the need for collaboration among citizens, the government, and the private sector to achieve a green and sustainable Bangladesh. She expressed these views while addressing the 'Dwijen Sharma Environment Award 2024' ceremony, organized by BRAC Bank and Torupallab, at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana, who also advises the Ministry of Water Resources, highlighted that environmental protection is not limited to policies or programs but is a shared responsibility for future generations. She acknowledged the continuous contributions of people in safeguarding Bangladesh's natural environment and asserted that these efforts will persist.
Rizwana cited several government initiatives, including the restoration of 'Sal' forests, protection of elephant corridors, and the 'Zero Soil' campaign, as examples of progress. She noted that Dhaka has become greener, with rooftop gardens becoming a common sight. She emphasized the enduring emotional bond people have with nature.
Special guests at the event included Nurun Nahar, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank; Faruq Moinuddin Ahmed, Vice Chairman of BRAC Bank; Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, Managing Director and CEO (Current Charge) of BRAC Bank; and Shahjahan Mridha Benu, Vice President of Torupallab. The event was presided over by Mokarram Hossain, General Secretary of Torupallab.
This year, the 'Dwijen Sharma Environment Award 2024' recognized four individuals for their contributions to environmental conservation. The 'Tree Friends' honors were awarded to Md Aminul Islam of Jhenaidah, the Sonapahar Project of Mirsarai, and Sabuj Chakma of Rangamati. Additionally, the 'Biodiversity Award' was given to Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, a life member of Bangla Academy.
