Dhaka: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized the need for localised solutions to waste management, proper segregation, and recycling to tackle Bangladesh’s pollution challenges.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana articulated that segregation, recycling, and composting of wastes should be prioritized over waste-to-energy options during a meeting with a Japanese environmental expert delegation led by Yoneda Johichiro, Representative Director of Chikyu Network Cooperative. The meeting took place at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka, with Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed also in attendance.

Rizwana, who also serves as the water resources adviser, highlighted the necessity for environmentally sound technologies to guide future waste management strategies. She stated that the government is eager to adopt sustainable models that are safe, inclusive, and locally relevant.

The discussions centered around potential collaborative efforts in pollution control and sustainable waste management. Rizwana acknowledged Japan’s reputation for environmental excellence and expressed enthusiasm for knowledge-sharing and future cooperation. She expressed interest in Japan’s waste management practices and their experience with waste-to-energy solutions, while cautioning about their environmental impact.

Rizwana also noted the importance of public trust in environmental initiatives, urging that proposals prioritize transparency, effective collection systems, and community engagement. The Japanese delegation showed a strong interest in collaborating with Bangladesh on pollution control, biodiversity conservation, and modern waste management. Both parties agreed to explore technical cooperation in the near future.
