Dhaka: The River Police is set to initiate a comprehensive 22-day nationwide operation starting October 4 to protect the mother Hilsha. Chief of the River Police, Additional Inspector General (IGP) Kusum Dewan, announced the operation during a view exchange meeting at the River Police Headquarters in the capital.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation will prohibit the collection, transportation, storage, purchase and sale, processing, marketing, and exchange of Hilsha fish across the country during this period. Officers from various ranks, including DIGs, Additional DIGs, Superintendents of Police, and Additional Superintendents of Police, participated in the meeting both directly and virtually.
The meeting also reviewed potential risks, obstacles, or possible attacks by miscreants during the operation. The River Police chief emphasized the need for coordination with fishing communities and relevant authorities to ensure a safe and successful operation. He instructed the officers to deploy the necessary personnel and coordinate with other organizations to strengthen the recovery of illegal fishing nets, aiming for better results than in previous years.
