Dhaka: The River Police have successfully seized over 2.59 crore meter of illegal fishing nets and arrested 332 individuals as part of a nationwide operation aimed at protecting fisheries resources and ensuring security on river routes over the past week.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation also resulted in the seizure of 2,316 kilograms of fish and 590 kilograms of jellied shrimp. Additionally, 179 bushes were destroyed from the river during the operation. The River Police apprehended 332 individuals, leading to the filing of 83 cases. These include 54 cases under the Fisheries Act, 10 for reckless speeding, three under the Balumahal Act, 10 for unintentional death, two under the Narcotics Control Act, one for extortion, two for robberies, and 10 related to the recovery of unidentified bodies.
The River Police further filed cases against 92 bulkheads and seized nine dredgers due to a lack of valid documents. The confiscated illegal fishing nets and jellied shrimps were destroyed, while the fish were distributed to orphanages.
