Dhaka: Roads and Highway Division (RHD) today evicted over 500 roadside illegal structures at Suagazi area on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. Several hundred illegal shops and other establishments were built up at Suagazi Bazar under Cumilla Sadar Dakkhhin occupying the land of RHD.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the RHD and local administration had served several notices on the illegal occupants to remove their establishments, but the occupants did not comply. Recently, a district administration meeting on law and order, held in anticipation of Eid-ul-Fitr, decided to immediately evict the establishments from the highway.
Syed Refay Abid, Assistant Commissioner of Cumilla Sadar Dakkhhin, led the eviction drive. The operation also saw the participation of RHD Sub-Divisional Engineer Md Adnan Ibn Hassan and representatives from the Army, Police, and other agencies.
Local businessmen have alleged that they were not previously notified to remove their establishments and now find themselves without shelter. When contacted, Sub-Divisional Engineer of Cumilla RHD, Adnan Ibn Hassan, stated that the eviction drive was conducted to alleviate traffic congestion in the area. He also mentioned that similar operations would continue in other areas along the highways.
